Ultimate Frisbee. What the hell is that?

Ultimate Frisbee. The first time I heard those two words, which literally turned my life upside down, was in December 2015.

I’ve met my friend after some absence. Turns out that she was training this awesome sport. That was no surprise. After all, she was trying all sorts of new things for some time now. At the same time, I was trying to survive in a startup environment as a marketing intern. The stress pretty much Hulk smashed me. Not once. Not twice. Actually, I felt like that… every.single.day. She must have brought up Ultimate a few times and the notion I’ve got about it was far from what it actually is.

According to what I thought, Ultimate Frisbee was something involving at least two people. Nope, no dogs. Not if you train indoors. Right. The word ultimate hinted at it being some kind of extreme hybrid of…things. I could picture some crazy Runmageddon or parkour race with frisbee throwing! That sounds like an ultimate challenge, right? Or Captain America! Who doesn’t want to be shield throwing hero? But how is that a sport?

All I knew was that someone got creative with the sport. I was curious, but…I also had my questions. As an expert in excuses, I tried to talk myself out of it. I had some questions:

  1. Does it involve people? Yes.
  2. Does it involve a lot of running? Hell yes.
  3. Do I need to talk to anyone..? 😉

An introvert’s nightmare, right?

So, what is Ultimate Frisbee actually?

It’s a fast-paced, non-contact team sport. It’s played all over the world in three categories: Open, Women and Mixed. The players need to develop some throwing skills as well as stamina and agility. Instead of a ball, the players need to pass around a flying disc. A frisbee. The sport has to be one of the most dynamic and fastest developing sports out there.

Ultimate is a self-officiating field sport that promotes The Spirit of The Game (SOTG). The players need to know the game rules by heart and understand what fair play means. I think those two things are what got me into Ultimate at first! The tournaments take place in many countries all around the world. A tournament may last from 2 to 5 days. Players may play up to 8 games during a tournament that lasts two days. Oh, and the game lasts around 75 minutes.

Ultimate Frisbee is also unique because of how open and friendly are the people that play the game. Many teams welcome beginners right away, so that’s why it’s so easy to get involved in the game. The basic rules are easy to understand, so anyone can start playing right away. Also, once you start playing, remember that your teammates will soon become your family. What’s not to love about Ultimate? 🙂

This cool video pretty much sums up why Ultimate is so great. Check it out!
